Family-Friendly Resorts
Best resorts for families with young kids and beginners.
Yuzawa is the easiest ski area to reach from Tokyo. The Shinkansen takes about 70–90 minutes, and some resorts are very close to the station.
How you choose a resort here depends on your trip. If you want a day trip, GALA Yuzawa is hard to beat — the gondola starts right at the Shinkansen station, so you can leave Tokyo in the morning and be on snow before lunch. If you are staying overnight, Naeba is a strong choice, with a large ski-in ski-out hotel and plenty of runs for families.
One thing to plan for: weekends in January and February are busy. From my own trips, three simple steps make the day smoother. First, buy your lift tickets before you arrive. Second, book your rental gear in advance. Third, eat lunch early at 11 or late at 13:00, so you miss the busiest hour. These small steps save a lot of waiting time with children.
By Shinkansen, it takes only 70-90 minutes to Echigo-Yuzawa Station, in the centre of the area. GALA Yuzawa connects directly to its own Shinkansen station, so you can reach the snow without a bus or car.
Yuzawa is on the Sea of Japan side, which gets a lot of snow. The snow is light and deep, and many runs feel soft and easy to turn on.
Yuzawa sits in Niigata, about 70–90 minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen — the most accessible ski cluster in the country. The area has more than 20 resorts in total. The six we cover here are the ones we recommend to international visitors, chosen for access, English support, and family-friendliness — from GALA's station-direct convenience to Kagura's late-season powder.
