Karuizawa is one of the easiest day trips from Tokyo. The Shinkansen takes about 70 minutes, and the slopes are compact and good for beginners.
It is a friendly place for families with young children. Children aged 12 and under ski free on the lifts. A one-day adult lift pass is about ¥10,000, and lunch on the mountain is around ¥2,500 per person. For the train, a one-way reserved seat from Tokyo is about ¥6,130 for an adult and about ¥3,060 for a child, so plan for the round trip when you set your budget. Prices change each year, so please check the official sites for the exact cost in your season.
The town itself gives you something to do on a non-ski day. There are shops, cafes, and a large outlet mall, which makes Karuizawa a good first trip if your family is not sure how many days they want on snow.
