Let me be honest from the start. If all you want is an easy day trip from Tokyo on the snow, GALA is the simpler choice — the train goes almost to the lifts. So do not come to Yamanashi for the snow itself, and do not come here for powder. That is not what this area is for.
What Yamanashi has is Mount Fuji. These small resorts sit right at the foot of the mountain, south-west of Tokyo, and on a clear day you ski with Fuji standing in front of you. You cannot get that view at any other ski area in Japan. For a family that wants to see Mount Fuji and put their children on snow in the same trip, this is the one place that does both. Fujiten is the one I suggest, because it is easy to reach by bus from Tokyo, and it is a gentle, beginner-friendly hill — a good spot for a child's first time on skis.
Now the honest part. These resorts are small, and you will get bored quickly if you ski all day. The snow is mostly man-made, and it is nothing like the snow in Hakuba or Myoko. If your main reason for coming to Japan is to ski, I would not send you here.
But if skiing is just one part of a bigger trip — Fuji, the lakes, the city — and you want your children to feel snow with that famous mountain in view, Yamanashi gives you something no other ski area can.
