My Recommendation
Every time I come to Tsugaike with my kids, we start on Kane no Naru Oka — the widest, most open beginner run in all of Hakuba. No obstacles, no blind corners, and you can see your child from anywhere on the slope. Note that Tsugaike is in Otari, about 20-30 minutes from central Hakuba — once there, everything you need is on-site.

Tsugaike Kogen Ski Resort, located at the foot of the majestic Northern Japanese Alps in Nagano Prefecture, is renowned for its abundant snowfall each year and breathtaking mountain scenery.
Here, visitors can enjoy top-quality powder snow across a variety of slopes that cater to all skill levels—from gentle runs perfect for beginners to steep courses that thrill advanced riders.
One of the resort’s highlights is its convenient gondola, allowing quick and easy access to higher elevations. From the observation deck, you’ll be treated to stunning panoramic views of the Northern Alps, leaving you with unforgettable memories of your trip.

I'm a Tokyo-based snowboarder and father of two with more than 20 years on Japan's slopes. Every resort recommendation on this site comes from a personal visit, with the single exception of Maiko (clearly flagged on its page).
In addition, the surrounding area offers a wealth of hot springs and local culinary delights, ensuring there are plenty of ways to relax and savor the culture beyond skiing and snowboarding. For international visitors seeking the perfect blend of traditional Japanese charm and pristine winter landscapes, Tsugaike Kogen is truly an ideal destination.

More Info →The widest, gentlest single run in Hakuba with no blind spots
Kane no Naru Oka (Bell Hill) is the widest, gentlest single slope in all of Hakuba — one massive open run with no blind spots. You can see your kids from anywhere on the slope, and there's plenty of room to avoid collisions with other skiers. One catch: it's on a separate base from the main area, so you'll need to take the gondola up to the middle of the mountain first, then ski down to it. Also, because it sits at the lowest elevation, it may not be open during early or late season when snow cover is thin.
English lessons, foot baths, a DJ booth, and a standing bar at the base
Tsugaike is one of Hakuba's most family-friendly resorts, with English lessons readily available through Evergreen ski school. But the base area goes beyond skiing — there's a foot bath, a standing bar, and even a DJ booth, so non-skiing members of your group won't be bored. If you're looking for a resort where everyone in the family can have a good day, this is it.
Flat traverses between courses mean unstrapping and skating
Snowboarders, heads up: there are very flat traverse sections between some courses. You'll likely have to unstrap one foot and skate through them. If you're riding with skiers, they'll be waiting for you — so plan accordingly or stick to routes that avoid the flats.
