Charmant Hiuchi is a ski resort in Itoigawa, Niigata, on a north-facing slope at the foot of Mount Hiuchi, looking out over the Sea of Japan. It is best known for one thing: about 65 to 70% of the skiable area is left ungroomed. The resort is divided into groomed courses, ungroomed areas, and closed areas, and the ungroomed zones are kept close to their natural state, with deep snow, tree runs, gullies, ridges, and bowls. The heavy, reliable snowfall and the powder draw a loyal group of returning skiers, and the season runs until around Golden Week.
This is a specialist mountain. The course split is about 20% beginner, 45% intermediate, and 35% advanced, but the real character of the resort is its off-piste terrain. Snowboarding is allowed across the whole mountain, and there is a board park. For families, there is a snow park and a kids room, and on designated "Ski Children's Day" dates elementary children ski free. But parents of true beginners should understand that Charmant Hiuchi is built around deep-snow and tree skiing, not gentle learning slopes, and there is no night skiing and no on-site hot spring.
The mountain is reached mainly by car or arranged transport in the Itoigawa area. The resort has a main lift that reaches all courses, and an Austrian ski school runs lessons on weekends and holidays from December to March. Visitors planning to ski the ungroomed terrain should always check the daily conditions board, because which areas are open changes with the snow.
