Still have questions?
Contact usKaruizawa is the easiest big-name ski resort from central Tokyo—about an hour by Hokuriku Shinkansen—and sits right by Karuizawa Station. Thanks to extensive snowmaking, it’s among the first in Nagano to open each season, with a bright, sunny, family-friendly vibe and plenty of English support. The vast Prince Shopping Plaza next to the slopes adds dining and retail right at the base.
Karuizawa is best understood as a day trip or one-night add-on to a Tokyo vacation, not a standalone ski holiday. The Shinkansen gets you here in about 70 minutes from Tokyo Station, and the resort is right next to the station. The slopes run primarily on artificial snow, so don't come expecting powder — but for a first taste of skiing in Japan, or a fun family day in the snow, it does the job well.
The Prince Shopping Plaza sits right at the base of the slopes — one of the largest outlet malls in Japan. This means your group doesn't all need to ski. Dad and the kids can hit the slopes while mom browses 200+ shops, or vice versa. After skiing, everyone can meet up for dinner without getting in a car. For families where not everyone is into snow sports, this flexibility is a real selling point.
Karuizawa is a Prince Hotels operation, so kids up to elementary school age ride the lifts for free. The growing number of international visitors means English support at ski schools and rental shops is solid. The resort also typically opens earlier than almost any other in Japan thanks to its snowmaking, often by early November — useful if you're visiting before the main season starts.
