Yuzawa

Getting there
The shortest trip from Tokyo. You ride one Shinkansen and step off inside the ski base. No bus, no taxi, no walking outside. This is the area to choose when you want the least travel and the lowest chance of getting lost.
- Mode
- Shinkansen only, zero transfers
- Time
- About 90 minutes from Tokyo Station
- Cost
- Around ¥6,500 one way (reserved seat)
- Luggage
- Carry it on the train; no shipping needed for a day trip
- Watch out
- The return Shinkansen fills up. Book a reserved seat for the way home.
Tak's take:GALA Yuzawa is the clearest example. You walk through the station gates and you are already at the base station. I have taken my own kids here when we wanted snow without a long day of travel. You can ski in the morning and still be back in Tokyo for dinner.
Verdict: Best for families who want a first taste of snow with the least travel. If you want two or more days of skiing, base yourself in Echigo-Yuzawa and reach the nearby resorts from there.
