Tak's take:GALA Yuzawa is the clearest example. You walk through the station gates and you are already at the base station. I have taken my own kids here when we wanted snow without a long day of travel. You can ski in the morning and still be back in Tokyo for dinner.
Verdict: Best for families who want a first taste of snow with the least travel. If you want two or more days of skiing, base yourself in Echigo-Yuzawa and reach the nearby resorts from there.
Getting there
The easiest area to combine with a Tokyo holiday. The slope sits a few minutes from Karuizawa Station, and the outlet mall is in walking distance. Your family can split up — some ski, some shop — and meet for lunch.
Tak's take:From Karuizawa Station it is about a 1-minute taxi or a 10-minute walk to the slope, and a free shuttle runs too. Because it is only about 1.5 hours from Tokyo, a day trip works. The outlet mall is walkable, so the family can split into a ski group and a shopping group and still enjoy the trip together.
Verdict: Best for mixed families where not everyone skis, or for adding one ski day to a Tokyo trip. The man-made snow means few thin patches, so for everything except powder it works very well.

Tak's take:The Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches Iiyama Station in about 1.5 hours, then a Nagaden bus takes about 25 minutes to the village. People are often surprised, but Nozawa has better access than Hakuba. Buses run about 8 times on weekdays, with the first around 7:10 and the last around 17:30.
Verdict: Best for first-time Japan skiers who want a real village feel with English support. Be honest with yourself first: it is almost entirely international visitors now, and food and drinks are priced high.

Verdict: Best for families who want serious terrain and do not mind a longer travel day. Note that Happo-One closes its upper lifts in strong wind, so keep a backup plan for those days.

Verdict: Best for skiers who want the most terrain and will stay on the mountain. There is no onsen town like Nozawa, so once you are back at the hotel, nights are quiet. If you want hot springs too, stay in Yudanaka or Shibu Onsen instead.

Tak's take:From Tokyo I take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano, then the Shinano Railway Kita-Shinano line to Myoko-Kogen — about 2 hours 10 minutes in total. Having to board a second train or bus at Nagano is the hard part. Because the access takes effort, a one-night trip leaves almost no time to ski.
Verdict: Best for families planning a longer stay — four nights or more. With that much time, the deep snow and long runs are worth the extra transfer. For a short trip, choose an area closer to Tokyo.
