My Recommendation
I recommend starting your day at the Escal Plaza base, which has a Burton flagship store, Subway, an onsen, and a rental counter all under one roof. The Toomi slope is one of the most satisfying first runs in Hakuba — wide, open, and scenic — and every route on the mountain leads back here. When Happo-One's gondola closes due to wind, Goryu usually stays fully open.

Hakuba Goryu is a well-rounded snow resort made up of three zones—Iimori, Toomi, and Alps-Daira. Up high, Alps-Daira serves panoramic intermediate-to-advanced terrain; at the base, Toomi runs Japan-style night skiing; and Iimori caters to first-timers and families with gentle slopes and kids’ facilities. The upper mountain is interlinked with Hakuba 47, letting you sample varied terrain and longer laps in a single day. Visitors will find English- and Chinese-language lessons, robust rental options, and clear base-area amenities (food, lockers, changing rooms) for smooth logistics. On storm days you can chase powder, on bluebirds you’ll ride with big alpine views, and after sunset you can switch to night skiing—Hakuba Goryu’s versatility makes it an easy recommendation for mixed-ability groups and short trips alike.

Broad gentle slope with GORYU WAVES terrain banks for advanced riders
Toomi is a broad, gentle slope that works for beginners and kids, but it's not boring — GORYU WAVES, a set of natural-terrain banks built into the slope, gives advanced snowboarders something to play with on the same run. And no matter where you ski on the mountain, every route brings you back down to the Escal Plaza base, so mixed-level groups can split up on the mountain and easily meet up at the bottom.
Burton flagship, wax shop, Subway, crêpes, coffee, onsen — all under one roof
Goryu's base building is stacked: Burton's flagship store, a ski and snowboard wax shop (I get my board hot-waxed here every visit), Subway, a crêpe stand, a solid coffee shop, multiple restaurants, and an onsen — all under one roof. If someone in your group doesn't ski, they'll be perfectly happy here all day.
Linked at the summit, but separate bases and a tricky mid-mountain traverse
Goryu and Hakuba 47 are linked at the top of the mountain, and a joint pass covers both. But the base areas are completely separate, so splitting your group between the two resorts doesn't work well in practice. There's a mid-mountain traverse route connecting them, but it's narrow with some steep sections — not recommended for beginners. If you want to ride both, go together and return to the same base.
Tokyo Station → Nagano Station (~1h20–1h30, Hokuriku Shinkansen) → Alpico bus (~1h10–1h20) → Goryu Escal Plaza.
